History of KIPP Indonesia

KIPP was born in the middle of repressive situation under regime of Soeharto. At that time, people didn’t allow to participate in politics without the permission of the government and should follow the rule from government.

The political situation turned in the opposite, once Soeharto resigned from his position as President of Indonesia in 1998. People could express their own voice. For KIPP itself, KIPP’s activities are fully guaranteed by The Electoral Law Nr 3/1999 article 27.

Founded and supported by more than 30 local NGOs, journalists, students, community organizations, youth organizations, professional associations, religions and labors on 15^th March 1996 made KIPP the first and the biggest election monitoring organization in Indonesia. KIPP spread all over Indonesia and establishes in 33 provinces and more than 480 districts in Indonesia until present.

Since its establishment, KIPP monitors and conducts trainings for trainers and volunteers throughout Indonesia. KIPP realizes that election is the gate of democracy, that’s why KIPP takes a part in Parliament monitoring and the amendment of election law, too.

The change of the electoral law allows people vote directly for the head of province and district. Many local elections held all over Indonesia and KIPP monitors the local elections both Governor and District elections includes post conflict provinces like Aceh and West Papua.

As part of the world, KIPP monitors elections abroad, such as elections in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, Taiwan, Finland, Europe, Nepal, Timor Leste, Sri Lanka and so on.

KIPP is one of the founders and board members of Asian Network for Free Election (ANFREL).
